David Carroll works fast, and he’ll tell you so plainly. He’s a certified hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner and trainer, and by his own account he’s logged more than ten thousand hours of client work. He’ll be at the Guildhall in September.
Alongside his one-to-one practice, based at the Doncaster Hypnotherapy Clinic, David trains other people to do the work. He was taught and mentored by the hypnotherapist Ali Campbell, and he now delivers Campbell’s signature hypnotherapy training using the same methods. He’s a member of professional bodies including the CMA and the ABNLP.
What hypnotherapy is, and isn’t
It helps to clear up what hypnosis actually involves, because films have done it no favours. You’re not asleep and you’re not under anyone’s control. It’s a focused, relaxed state, a bit like being absorbed in a good book, in which the mind tends to be more open to helpful suggestion. David’s approach is built around getting people to a useful place quickly rather than settling in for months, which is what he means by working fast.
Where NLP comes in
NLP, or neuro-linguistic programming, is the other half of what David does. In plain terms it’s a set of practical techniques for noticing the patterns in how you think, talk to yourself and respond to things, and then adjusting the ones that aren’t serving you. Paired with hypnotherapy, it’s the sort of toolkit people reach for when they want to shift a habit, quieten anxious thinking or get unstuck around confidence.
The training side
Not everyone who stops by will be looking for a session. Some will be curious about learning the work itself. David’s training school is aimed at new practitioners, and he teaches the same techniques he uses day to day, so his stand is a sensible place to ask honest questions about what the training involves before committing to anything.
Something to try before you come
Here’s a small NLP-flavoured habit you can start now. Next time you catch yourself saying “I can’t do X”, try swapping it for “I haven’t worked out how to do X yet”. It sounds like a word game, and it partly is, but the second version quietly leaves the door open instead of closing it. Notice how often the first phrasing turns up in a day. Just spotting it is the first move.
