Rachs Wellness Loft is run by Rachel Mellish, who works with crystal singing bowls, chimes and other instruments to run sound baths across Greater Manchester. She’s a Reiki Master who has also trained in sound healing and crystal healing, and she holds accreditation through the IPHM. She’ll be running sound sessions at the Guildhall across the weekend in September.
What a crystal bowl sound bath is
A sound bath isn’t a performance you watch or music in the usual sense. You settle somewhere comfortable, close your eyes, and let the tones from the bowls wash over you while Rachel plays. The sound builds slowly and holds. There’s nothing to do and nothing to get right, which is rather the point. One nice detail of Rachel’s sessions is that afterwards she’ll often explain what she played and why she chose particular bowls or crystals, so you leave understanding a bit more about what you just experienced.
What taking part tends to feel like
Most people describe a sound bath as deeply relaxing. The long, steady tones give a busy mind one simple thing to rest on, and that’s often enough for it to slow down for a while. Some people drift close to sleep; others just feel calmer and less wound up when they sit back up. Everyone responds a little differently, and that’s completely normal.
Who it suits
It tends to suit anyone who finds it hard to switch off, or who’s curious about a gentle way to relax that asks nothing of them. You don’t need any experience and you don’t need to believe anything in particular for it to feel pleasant. If you’d rather stay seated than lie down, that’s usually fine too.
Something to try this week
You don’t need bowls for a small taste of this. Once a day, sit somewhere quiet and hum a single steady note for a few slow breaths, letting the sound last as long as the out-breath does. Notice the faint buzz of it in your chest and face. It’s a simple way to give your attention one calm thing to settle on.
Rachs Wellness Loft is one of over 70 readers, healers and stallholders at the Mind Body Spirit & Wellness Weekend, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September 2026, at Stockport Masonic Guildhall. Rachel’s sessions, like every session across the weekend, are included with entry.
